The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides monthly social grants which over million South Africans depend to meet their basic needs. Beneficiaries need to know about payment dates which will start in April 2026. SASSA will use its standard payment process to conduct grant distribution according to current information.
The payment cycle will start on Thursday, 2 April 2026 with the Older Persons Grant which marks the beginning of the grant distribution. The Disability Grant will be paid on Friday, 3 April 2026. Various grants such as the Child Support Grant Foster Child Grant Care Dependency Grant War Veterans Grant and Grant-in-Aid are scheduled for payment on Monday 6 April 2026. The schedule enables SASSA to operate its payment system for multiple payments while minimizing crowding at its payment locations.
Why Payments Are Made In Phases
SASSA pays grants in phases every month to enhance safety while decreasing customer lines at banks and ATMs and retail stores. The agency starts payments for older persons and disability beneficiaries because they represent the most vulnerable citizens. Beneficiaries are reminded that they have the option to postpone their grant withdrawal until after the payment date. The deposited funds will stay in the bank account or SASSA card until the beneficiary decides to take them out. The system prevents collection points from becoming crowded while people can take their money whenever it suits them.
Grant Reviews And System Improvements
SASSA has increased its review system because it wants to stop improper grant payments which currently result in payments to wrong recipients. The system checks serve two purposes which include fraud prevention and payment verification while they also protect social grant system integrity.
The process requires verification of three items which include beneficiaries personal information and income records and their eligibility determination. Government officials state that these controls enabled the government to save millions of rand every month because they stopped payments to individuals who no longer qualified for assistance. These improvements form part of broader efforts to protect public funds while ensuring that vulnerable South Africans continue to receive the support they need.
New Digital And Biometric Measures
SASSA has implemented multiple digital enhancements which will help it deliver better services. The organization made its biggest operational change through the development of biometric identification systems which will be used for both new applicants and specific existing beneficiaries.
The agency created an online e-Life Certification system which enables beneficiaries to verify their status without needing to go to SASSA offices. This new self-service platform helps reduce administrative pressure and makes the process more convenient for grant recipients.
Grant Increases Expected In April 2026
The upcoming social grant increases will take effect on April 2026. The Older Persons Grant and Disability Grant are expected to increase to around R2,400 while the War Veterans Grant may rise to approximately R2,420.
The Child Support Grant and Foster Care Grant and Grant-in-Aid will all receive slight payment increases. The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is expected to maintain its value at R370.
